Ben Greer was born in Spartanburg, SC, in 1948. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his M.A. in Creative Writing from Hollins University. His first novel, Slammer, was published by Atheneum in 1975. It has been reprinted in London and also chosen as part of the Voices of the South series by LSU press.

Greer went on to publish four more novels, three books of poetry, and a biography. In 2008, Theatre South produced his play Little Tin Gods.

Having taught at USC for 33 years, he is retired and divides his time between South Carolina and Maine. He is married, with one child.
